Frequently asked questions

Can I substitute Border Fields Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil for other oils in recipes?
Yes, Border Fields Rapeseed oil can be used in place of any vegetable oil. See our recipes section for more ideas.

Why is rapeseed oil healthier than olive oil?
Rapeseed oil contains just 6% saturated fat, whereas most olive oils have 14% saturated fat content. Rapeseed oil also has an excellent balance of Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Vitamin E.

What is the difference between canola and rapeseed oil?
In the US & Canada, oilseed which is known as canola is high in erucic acid whereas in Europe, oilseed which is known as rapeseed is very low in erucic acid. Although erucic acid can be toxic to humans at certain levels, the oilseed types that have been bred in Europe for food have been selected for their very low levels of this substance. The variety we use to produce Border Fields contains levels of erucic acid which are far below the commonly accepted safety limit.

Why is your product not organic?
If rapeseed is grown organically, there are no suitable means to control weed growth. These weeds are then harvested with the rapeseed and cannot be satifactorily separated from the crop. When pressed the oil can be rancid and unpalatable. Our crop is GM free and our farms support the Countryside Stewardship Scheme employing traditional farming methods to preserve our landscape and wildlife.
